‘Reinventing the wheel’ is a phrase often laced with hyperbole. In this case, however, it is definitely a statement of fact. Michelin, who first came to automobile prominence by first affixing rubber tires to wooden wheels in the late 19th century, has now possibly created another motor revolution this century with their new Michelin Active Wheel.

The Michelin Active Wheel consolidates both the drive and suspension systems entirely within the wheel itself, therefore negating the need for an engine, gearbox or transmission shaft. Having all essential components housed in the four wheel points means that it is possible to completely rethink the car; the absence of a traditional engine releases a multitude of constraints that would typically limit the chassis design.

The first real example of this is the Venturi Volage roadster, unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. As well as completely revolutionising the way we think about car design, the Michelin Active Wheel, which itself is electrically powered, will hopefully lead us to adopt more efficient ways of fueling our vehicles.
